Radar Level Gauge Quick Installation Guide

Tank installation

A standard installation

  • The radar antenna cannot tilt to the tank wall.
  • In order to minimize temperature effect, at the junction of butt joint flange must use the spring washer.
  • The rod antenna launching point must reach out to install pipe.
  • The vertical placement of the rod antenna beam direction, don’t let the tank wall.

Installation instructions

  • The recommended position (2), the outer wall of tank wall to install pipe shall meet the following from the tank wall best distance to tank diameter of 1/4 or 1/6, the minimum distance from the installation of tank wall as the measurement range of 1/10.
  • For example: liquid level of storage tank 10m, and the tank wall install the minimum distance of 1m.
  • Cannot be installed above the feeding port (4).
  • Cannot be installed in the central position (3), if installed in the central, yield multiple false echo, clutter echo will lead to real signal loss.
  • If you can’t keep the instrument and the tank wall of the tank wall distance, the medium will adhesion caused by false echo, when debugging instrument should be false echo storage.

Tank installation instructions

How do you calibrate the radar level transmitter?

Set up the guided wave radar level transmitter

HART communicator, power supply, and the multimeter are as below (see below calibration setup Diagram).

Check the configuration of the lower range value (0% level, 4 mA) and high range value (100% level, 20 mA).
Make sure that the inputted data is as per the datasheet.
For example, the lower range value is 10 inch and the high range value is 35 inches (both of it are measured from the bottom of the level transmitter probe)

Fill the level transmitter chamber with water up to the 0% level.
Read the level measurement in the transmitter LCD (or in the HART communicator). Set this condition as 0% level through the HART communicator.

Read the mA output of the transmitter by using a multimeter.
Adjust (if any) through the HART communicator so that the output of the transmitter (on the multimeter) is 4 mA.

Fill the level transmitter chamber with water up to 100% level.
Read the level measurement in the transmitter LCD (or in the HART communicator). Set this condition as 100% level through the HART communicator.

Read the mA output of the transmitter by using a multimeter.
Adjust (if any) through the HART communicator so that the output of the transmitter (on the multimeter) is 20 mA.

The radar level gauge uses a transmission frequency of up to 26G, which has the following advantages over 6G radar:

Radar Level Sensor Working Principle

A low-frequency radar level meter is a 6GHz radar level measurement product. It uses an advanced microprocessor. The low-frequency radar has a long emission wavelength, and when encountering obstacles, it can cause diffraction to bypass the obstacles. Then, through optimized echo processing technology, false echo processing technology, and software digital processing technology, the true level is calculated.

Radar Level Sensor Advantages and Disadvantages

  1. Determine the height of the measured storage medium tank during calibration. And after empty calibration, the output of zero and full scale is set to 4mA for empty tank zero point and 20mA for full tank (maximum range).
  2. Some volatile organic matter in the measuring medium will crystallize on the horn or antenna of the radar level gauge. They need to be inspected and cleaned regularly.  
  3. Interference wave influence. In daily maintenance, you can use a PC (with VEGA Visual Operating software) to remotely observe the reflected wave curve. For possible interference waves, the level gauge can be used to identify false waves. Remove the influence of these interference reflection waves to ensure accurate measurement.

The microwave frequency used by the microwave level meter has three frequency bands: C band (5.8~6.3GHz), X band (9~10.5GHz), K band (24~26GHz).

The total beam width of the radar level gauge is inversely proportional to the frequency of the device. Therefore, for an antenna of the same diameter, if the frequency of the radar level gauge is increased, the beam width will be lower than that of a lower frequency device. The narrow beam minimizes the influence of the nozzle, tank wall and interference.

At the same time, the measurement range of the radar level gauge is also affected by factors such as frequency, antenna size, dielectric constant of the liquid, and process conditions.

Low-frequency radar level gauges are preferred when measuring steam, foam, and condensate. In most other applications, high-frequency radar level gauges are preferred for ease of installation.

Radar Water Level Sensor working principle

Measuring principle:

Micro-power microwave pulses are emitted from the radar antenna and travel through space at the speed of light. It is reflected by the object to be measured and received by the radar.

The time difference between the transmission and reception of the pulse signal is proportional to the distance from the radar antenna to the measured object. The propagation speed of electromagnetic signals in space is the speed of light. Usually when measuring the distance, the time difference between the transmitted pulse and the received pulse is very short and only on the order of nanoseconds.

Conventional technology is difficult to accurately measure this time.

SIRD-908 Radar Water Level Sensor uses an advanced equivalent sampling method to accurately measure the original nanosecond time interval. So as to realize the accurate measurement of distance.

Transmit-reflect-receive:

The extremely tiny 26GHz radar signal is emitted in the form of short pulses from the antenna end of the radar level gauge.

The rotation period of the radar pulse from emission to reception is proportional to the distance, that is, the level.

Ultrasonic tank level bottom sensor

The ultrasonic sensor (probe) is installed at the bottom of the tank’s external surface without the need for drilled holes in the tank. This allows for quick, simple installation that does not interrupt the tank’s operation.

External Ultrasonic Tank Level Sensor Installation

There are 4 holes on the base of the main body. It can be fixed in different positions by bolts. The user can decide according to the working site.

When the instrument host is installed, it is recommended to use the instrument protection box in areas with relatively low temperature to prevent the instrument temperature from being too low.

In areas with high temperature, the instrument should be installed in a cool place to avoid excessive temperature in the instrument caused by exposure.

The display screen of the main unit of the instrument cannot be exposed to sunlight for a long time.

For iron containers, you can apply silicone grease to the working surface of the sensor and use a magnetic suction cup to directly tightly attach it to the bottom of the container.

If the container shell is made of glass and other materials, the sensor can be pasted and fixed with glue or fixed to the bottom of the container with a bracket.

  • The direction of the sensor must be perpendicular to the measured liquid level.
  • There are no obstructions such as coils directly above the sensor;
  • Keep away from the liquid inlet at the bottom of the tank to avoid the influence of the violent flow of the liquid on the measurement;
  • Keep away from the position below the liquid inlet on the top of the tank. Avoid the impact of the liquid inlet and the violent fluctuation of the liquid level to affect the measurement;
  • It is higher than the liquid outlet or the sewage outlet. To avoid the influence of long-term deposits on the bottom of the tank on the measurement. If the conditions are not met, measures should be taken to ensure that the bottom of the tank is regularly removed;
  • When the liquid level sensor is installed by magnetic or welding/adhesive fixing method. The installation surface size on the container wall should not be less than the round surface of ∅80. The surface roughness should reach 1.7. The inclination should be less than 3° (except the bypass pipe).

Spherical tank:

For new tanks, if the manhole flange is not planned to be opened in recent years, and there is few liquid deposits, it is best to install it on the manhole flange. Because of the surface level, the signal is strongest.

When opening the inlet flange, remove the liquid level sensor first. After the inlet flange is installed and fixed, the liquid level sensor can be reinstalled.

If the deposits are not cleaned for a long time, a large amount of deposits may accumulate on the inner surface of the flange. In this case, the sensor installation position that can work stably for a long time is a circle around the manhole flange.

Here, the level is small, the sediment is small, and there is no rapid liquid flow interference. Although the signal for the new tank without sinking is not strong on the flange, it works stably for a long time.

Vertical tank:

Generally, choose the installation groove far from the liquid inlet and outlet (more than 90°).

For spherical tanks equipped with a calibrator. The calibration sensor is installed at the center of the calibrator on the outer wall of the tank.

If the calibrator is not installed, the calibration sensor should be installed at the height of the outer radius of the tank (equatorial zone).

The calibration sensors for the vertical tank and the process tank are installed on the outer side of the tank body, at a height of 0.5m to 1m from the tank bottom.

Note: After installing the calibration tube (calibrator) in the tank, the correct installation position should be marked with paint on the outside of the tank wall in time.

When the ultrasonic liquid level sensor is working, the high-frequency pulse sound wave is emitted by the transducer (probe). It is reflected on the surface of the measured object (water surface). The reflected echo is received by the same transducer (probe) and converted into an electrical signal . The time between sending and receiving the pulse (the movement time of the sound wave) is proportional to the distance from the transducer to the surface of the object.

Yes, of course the water level can be measured with an ultrasonic level sensor.
For water depth detection, the water depth calculation can be found through the distance between the ultrasonic sensor transceiver and the water surface. The sensor will send a short ultrasonic pulse and measure the propagation time of the pulse to the liquid and back. Then calculate the total depth of the water tank and subtract this distance to determine the water depth.

If the tank has an opening, we can use an integrated ultrasonic level sensor.

Features of SIRD-906 Radar Sanitary Level Sensor

1) Requirements for non-toxic and harmlessness of radar level gauge materials: different grades of stainless steel materials (304L, 316L, 410, 409, 329) are selected according to different conditions.

Ultrasonic vs Radar Level Sensor

There are three main differences between Ultrasonic and Radar Level Sensor:

Difference 1. The measurement range is different

Ultrasonic liquid level du measuring range: 0-50 meters;

The radar level gauge can measure all media with a dielectric constant> 1.2 in a vacuum, and the measurement range can reach 70 meters.

Difference 2: Different emission materials

The ultrasonic level gauge emits sound waves from the sensor (transducer), which is reflected by the liquid surface and then received by the same sensor or ultrasonic receiver;

Very short microwave pulses with very low energy emitted by the radar level gauge are transmitted and received through the antenna system, and the radar waves move at the speed of light.

Difference 3: Different measuring substances

Radar Water Level Sensor

Pulse radar level transmitters provide water level measurement based on directly measuring the running time of microwave pulses transmitted to and reflected from the surface of the river being measured. Using rs485 two-wire signal transmission, power supply and low power consumption are safe for outdoor use.

RS485 interface can be connected with 485 line, insert 4g sim card in dtu. 232 to usb to connect to the computer. Open the configuration tool and set the server address and port in the dtu configuration tool.

Radar Tank Level Sensor Installation Notes

(1) The horn of the horn-type intelligent radar level gauge must exceed the inner surface of the mounting hole by a certain interval (at least greater than 10mm).

(2) The axis of the antenna of the intelligent radar level gauge should be perpendicular to the reflective surface of the liquid level.

In addition, when performing routine maintenance on the intelligent radar level gauge, users can remotely observe the reflected wave curve with a PC (equipped with MAT software). For interference waves that may be newly generated later, the level gauge can be used to identify false waves. Remove the influence of these interference reflection waves to ensure correct measurement.

(3) Objects such as the stirring valve in the tank, the adhesion of the tank wall and the path. If it is within the signal range of the intelligent radar level gauge, it will produce interfering reflected waves and affect the level measurement. When installing, choose a suitable installation location to avoid interference from these factors.

Radar Level Sensor Working Principle

Radar level transmitter antenna microwave pulse is narrow, the downward transmission antenna.

What is the difference between radar and ultrasonic level transmitter?

In actual application, there are two methods for radar level sensors, namely, frequency modulated continuous wave type and pulse wave type. The liquid level sensor using FM continuous wave technology has high power consumption, must adopt a four-wire system, and the electronic circuit is complicated. The liquid level sensor using radar pulse wave technology has low power consumption and can be powered by two-wire 24VDC, which is easy to achieve intrinsic safety and has a wider application range.
Ultrasonic sensors use sound waves, and radar uses electromagnetic waves. This is the biggest difference.
Moreover, the penetrating ability and directivity of ultrasonic waves are much stronger than electromagnetic waves, which is why ultrasonic detection is more popular now.
The difference between the main applications:
   1. Ultrasonic accuracy is not as good as radar.
   2. The relative price of radar is relatively high.
  3. When using radar, consider the dielectric constant of the medium.
   4. Ultrasound cannot be applied to working conditions such as vacuum, high steam content or foam on the liquid surface.
   5. The radar measurement range is much larger than that of ultrasonic.
   6. The radar has a horn type, a rod type, and a cable type. Compared with ultrasonic, it can be applied to more complicated conditions.
