The reaction torque sensor is generally used to test the occasions where the torque changes slowly. The sampling speed is generally lower than 50 times per second. Such as testing the manual torque wrench, the static load torque of the transmission, etc.

The application range of static torque sensor is mainly used in test systems such as experimental machines and static torque detection.

Static torque does not involve acceleration. For example, the torque of the clock spring used to move the second hand is static torque. If the car is traveling at a steady speed, it will develop a rotational static torque because it only rotates, but not acceleration.

The engine produces static and dynamic torque. For example, if you measure torque in a car crankshaft, you measure dynamic torque because cylinder firing and piston rotation of the crankshaft involve acceleration. This static in a static torque sensor means that the measuring elastomer of the sensor does not participate in relative motion.

The flanges at both ends of the reaction torque sensor are praised by users for their excellent stability, higher measurement accuracy, higher cost performance and simpler monitoring methods.

The measuring elastic body of the sensor does not participate in the relative motion. The testing elastic body is subjected to the relative reaction force. During installation, one end is fixed and the other end is subjected to force.

Basic principle of reaction torque sensor:

Using strain gauge electrical measurement technology, a strain bridge is formed on the elastic shaft. The electrical signal of the elastic shaft being twisted can be measured by supplying power to the strain bridge.

Due to its excellent stability, high measurement accuracy and high cost performance, it has been widely praised in testing machines, static torque detection and other testing systems.

Reaction torque sensor and rotary torque sensor are the two longest used types of torque sensors.

The rotary torque sensor is based on the principle of resistance strain. It transmits wirelessly and non-contact through current collectors, brushes or electromagnetic coupling. It realizes power supply and signal output, and is suitable for intermittent or low-speed measurement. Torque can be measured in both forward and reverse directions.

The rotary torque sensor shaft can be rotated 360 degrees in both positive and negative directions. It mainly measures the high-speed 360-degree rotational torque and static torque. It is generally used to test the occasions where the torque fluctuates violently. It is necessary to implement the capture torque or torque peak. Such as tightening machines, electric wrenches, Motor output torque, engine output torque, drill pipe torque.

The reaction torque sensor converts the strain generated by the torsional torque into an electrical signal that has a linear relationship with it according to the principle of resistance strain. Static means that the measuring elastomer of the sensor does not participate in relative motion. From the understanding of force, this type of test is to test the relative reaction force of the elastic body.

The entire sensor axis of reaction torque sensor cannot be rotated. The rotation angle of the entire sensor is not recommended to exceed 45 degrees, otherwise it may be wound. The reaction torque sensor is generally used to test the occasions where the torque changes slowly. The sampling speed is generally lower than 50 times per second . Such as testing the manual torque wrench, the static load torque of the transmission, etc.

  1. Dynamic torque sensor: mainly used to measure torque and speed in rotating occasions.
    Dynamic torque sensors can be divided into large-range torque sensors, micro-range torque sensors, and disc torque sensors according to their shape and range.
  2. Static torque sensor: mainly used to measure torque in non-rotating situations.

The static torque sensor is not much different from the dynamic torque sensor, the key is the sampling speed of the secondary instrument.

Dynamic torque sensors are generally used to test situations where the torque fluctuates sharply. It is necessary to capture torque or torque peaks, such as tightening machines, electric wrenches, motor output torque, engine output torque, and drill pipe torque.

The static torque sensor is generally used to test the occasions where the torque changes slowly. The sampling speed is generally lower than 50 times per second. Such as testing the manual torque wrench, the static load torque of the transmission, etc.

In some cases, because the test object is rotating, the dynamic torque sensor can also be rotated for the convenience of testing.

The dynamic torque sensor can measure the electric signal of the torsion of the elastic shaft. It adopts the strain electrical measurement technology. A strain bridge is formed on the elastic shaft to provide power to the strain bridge. After the signal is amplified, it is converted into a frequency signal proportional to the strain through voltage-frequency conversion.

The static torque sensor converts the strain generated by the torque torque into an electrical signal that has a linear relationship with it according to the principle of resistance strain.

Static torque sensor rotation cannot exceed 360 degrees. If you need to measure the static working torque of the equipment. Both static and dynamic torque can meet your measurement requirements. In order to save costs, we recommend that you choose static torque sensor measurement. If you need to measure the torque of the equipment when it is working dynamically, you can only choose a dynamic torque sensor to measure it.

Learn More About 818 Shaft Torque Sensor-Dynamic Dual Range

Since the traditional speed and torque sensor has only a single range, when performing a small torque test, the test error will be far greater than the calibration error of the instrument, resulting in no reference value for the test results.

In response to this problem, torque sensor manufacturers divide the large-range torque sensor hardware into dual ranges. When the motor test system performs a small torque test, the test range is switched to a small range file. The advantage of this is to make the test more accurate.

The shaft torque meter is the detection of the perception of torsional torque on various rotating or non-rotating mechanical parts. Torque sensors convert physical changes in torque into precise electrical signals. Torque sensors can be used in the manufacture of viscometers, electric (pneumatic, hydraulic) torque wrenches, which have the advantages of high precision, fast frequency response, good reliability and long life.

A torque sensor is a precision measuring device that measures various torques, rotational speeds and mechanical power.

The main functions of the torque sensor are as follows:

  • It can measure dynamic torque and static torque;
  • The detection stability is very good, the anti-interference performance is very strong, and the accuracy is very good;
  • There is no need to adjust to zero every time you measure, and positive and negative torque can be measured continuously;
  • Its signal output can be operated with you, choose pulse wave or waveform – square wave;
  • It has a wide measurement range: there are 0 to 1000Nm standard to choose from, some non-standard.

The selection of the Shaft Torque Sensor range should be based on the actual maximum torque measured. Usually, a certain margin should be reserved to prevent the sensor from being damaged due to overload.

Calculation formula: M=9550×P/N
M: Torque Unit: N.m
P: Motor power unit: KW
N: Speed Unit: r/min

If the motor you are using is a three-phase induction motor. Due to the large instantaneous torque of the motor, it is recommended that the torque range should be selected as 2-3 times the rated torque.

  1. To transmit the output torque and power of rotating power equipment such as electric motors and internal combustion engines.
  2. Transfer the load torque and input power of generators, fans, pumps, mixers, reducers, transmissions, winches, propellers, drilling machinery and other equipment.
  3. To transmit the torque in the working process of various machining centers and automatic machine tools.
  4. Transmit torque and efficiency generated by various rotating power equipment systems.
  5. Can be used to make viscometers.

  1. The power supply of this series of torque signal couplers is provided by a set of toroidal transformers on the standard strain bridge torque sensor. The induced voltage is rectified on the shaft. The voltage regulator circuit converts it into a high-stability DC voltage.
  2. This voltage is not only supplied to the strain bridge of the standard strain bridge torque sensor as a bridge voltage, but also supplied to the circuit on the shaft as a working voltage. The mV level torque signal detected by the strain bridge is amplified by a high-precision instrumentation amplifier to a KmV level strong signal, and then converted into a square wave signal proportional to the torsional strain through a V/F converter.

Through the wireless transmitter on the shaft, it is transmitted to the wireless receiver outside the shaft non-contact. After demodulation, it is restored to a digital signal with the same frequency as the square wave converted by V/F. The phase difference is less than 1μS, can generally be ignored.

  1. This series of torque sensors can work for a long time because of the transformer induction power supply. It is widely used in torque monitoring of motors, generators, reducers and diesel engines.
  2. Since the output square wave frequency signal is high level, the anti-interference ability is strong. It can be directly sent to the computer or PLC for processing without A/D conversion, which is very convenient to use.
  3. If you need to measure the speed, as long as the special speed sensor and its speed wheel are installed inside the torque signal coupler of this series, the speed signal of 60 square waves per revolution can be measured.

  1. Using two sets of couplings, install the sensor with torque signal coupler between the power source and the load.
  2. It is recommended to use flexible, elastic or universal joint couplings to ensure concentricity < 0.1mm;
  3. Power and load equipment must be fixed and reliable to avoid vibration.
  4. The base of the torque signal coupler and the base of the equipment should be fixed as flexible as possible (can swing). Avoid bending moments.

  • Directly send the torque frequency signal to the computer or PLC for processing;
  • Convert the torque frequency signal to F-V into an analog signal and send it to the data processor;
  • Send the torque frequency signal to the computer board virtual instrument. Real-time display of torque and speed value, torque alarm value, maximum torque value, output and input power value and related curves.

Measurement of torque:
Using strain gauge electrical measurement technology. A strain bridge is formed on the elastic shaft, and the electric signal of the elastic shaft being twisted can be measured by supplying power to the strain bridge.
After the strain signal is amplified, it undergoes pressure/frequency conversion. becomes a frequency signal proportional to the torsional strain. as the picture shows:

Measurement of rotational speed:
The rotational speed is measured by the method of magnetoelectric code disc. Each magnetoelectric disc has 60 teeth. The shaft drives the magnetoelectric code disc to generate 60 pulses per revolution. The accuracy of the speed sensor can reach ±0.1%~±0.5% (F•S).
The speed measurement method of this sensor adopts built-in speed measurement, please indicate whether to monitor the speed signal when ordering!

The selection of the torque sensor range should be based on the actual maximum torque measured. Usually there should be some margin. Prevent damage to the sensor due to overloading.

Calculation formula: M=9550×P/N

M: Torque Unit: N.m
P: Motor power unit: KW
N: Speed Unit: r/min

If the motor you are using is a three-phase induction motor. Due to the large instantaneous torque of the motor starting. It is recommended that the torque range should be selected to be 2-3 times the rated torque.

According to the connection form of the shaft and the length of the torque sensor, determine the distance between the prime mover and the load, adjust the distance between the axes of the prime mover and the load relative to the reference plane, so that the coaxiality of their axes is less than Φ0.03mm, and fix the original Motives and loads are on the datum plane.

Install the couplings on their respective shafts.

Adjust the distance between the torque sensor and the reference plane so that the coaxiality between its axis and the axis of the prime mover and the load is less than Φ0.03mm, and fix the torque sensor on the reference plane.

Tighten the coupling and the installation is complete.

A torque sensor is a force measuring device and torque measuring tool. It converts a torque measurement (static, dynamic or rotational) into another physical variable. In this case, into an electrical signal that can be measured, transformed and normalized. As the torque applied to the torque sensor increases, the electrical output signal changes proportionally.

Classification of torque sensors:

Dynamic Torque Transducers / Rotational Torque Transducers

Dynamic torque sensors/rotating torque sensors are used in applications where torque measurement must be performed on rotating shafts, engines or stationary electric machines. In this case, the transducer must rotate on a straight line connected to the shaft. Dynamic torque sensors are equipped with slip rings or wireless electronics that transmit torque signals while rotating (non-contact sensors).

Dynamic torque sensors/rotational torque sensors are often used as test tools for electric motors, torque measurement tools, turbines and generators to measure rotational torque. Shaft-to-shaft rotational torque sensors can also be used for feedback control, monitoring torque, analyzing test bench efficiency, and using strain gauges for torque measurements on rotating shafts.

The dynamic torque sensor/rotation torque sensor is also an important part of the dynamometer. Because it provides torque measurement and angular velocity (RPM), it can easily calculate the output power. So it can accurately calculate the electromechanical efficiency of the motor or engine.

Static torque sensor

In some applications, a static torque sensor can be used to measure the torque measurement made by an in-line rotary sensor (static torque measurement) at the point where the torque is transmitted to the ground.

A reaction torque meter has two mounting flanges (flange-to-flange transducers). One face is fixed to the ground or rigid structural member. The other face is fixed to the rotating shaft or rotating element. Rotation creates a shear force between the flanges. This shear force is captured by foil strain gages attached to the sensor beam. It is converted into electrical current through a Wheatstone bridge.

For a given application, static torque sensors (aka torque sensors) are generally not as sophisticated as rotary sensors. So less expensive than rotary sensors. Static torque transducers are often used as torque calibration tools or torque wrench calibration tools. Static torque sensors can also be used as miniature electric torque screwdrivers, allowing engineers to obtain torque feedback in real-time, or to study the torque applied during assembly.

Non contact torque sensor input shaft and output shaft are connected by torsion bar. There are splines on the input shaft and keyways on the output shaft.

When the torsion bar is twisted by the turning moment of the steering wheel, the relative position between the splines on the input shaft and the keyway on the output shaft is changed.

The relative displacement change of the spline and the keyway is equal to the torsion of the torsion rod, which makes the magnetic induction on the spline change. The change of the magnetic induction is converted into a voltage signal through the coil.

The high frequency part of the signal is filtered by the detection circuit and only the torque signal part is amplified.

Due to the non-contact working method, the non-contact torque sensor has a long life and high reliability. It is not easily affected by wear, has a smaller delay, and is less affected by the deflection of the shaft and axial offset. It has become widely used. Mainstream products of the application.

Frequently asked questions

The input and output shafts of the non-contact dynamic torque sensor are connected by torsion bars. The input shaft has splines. The output shaft has a keyway.

When the torsion bar is twisted by the turning torque of the steering wheel, the relative position between the spline on the input shaft and the keyway on the output shaft is changed.

The relative displacement change of the spline and keyway is equal to the twist of the torsion bar. This causes the magnetic susceptibility strength on the spline to change. The change in magnetic susceptibility strength is converted into a voltage signal by a coil.

Non-contact torque transducers have a long life and high reliability due to the non-contact mode of operation. They are less susceptible to wear and have a smaller delay time. Less affected by shaft deflection and axial shift.

Contact torque sensors and non-contact torque sensors are specific to the power supply and signal transmission principle.

For us, the general public, it may be a bit difficult to understand literally. Especially “non-contact torque sensors”.

Literally, it means that no contact is required during the measurement process to produce a result. In fact, they do not. They require contact with the device to be measured in order to detect the result.

The power supply and signal are transmitted directly during the measurement process. They are designed to pass in and out through carbon brushes and slip rings. This causes wear and tear during operation. And can not move at high speed, we usually call it “slip ring torque sensor”. With small size, light weight, fast frequency response, easy to install. The price is also relatively cheap.

“Non-contact” also refers to the operation process of power supply and signal is not contact transmission. Instead, the power supply is passed in through a “non-contact” form. The signal is passed out and the sensor itself is still connected directly to the power supply cable. This “non-contact” is achieved inside the sensor. It is not visible to us.

This “non-contact” can avoid the short life of “contact”. The problem of not being able to operate at high speeds. Because the principle of implementation is different, the size and weight are larger and heavier than those of “contact” sensors, but only in relative terms. With high precision, long service life, high speed operation.

Now the market is basically using “non-contact torque sensor” more. Because the “contact torque sensor” has a life limit. Although the price is advantageous, the total price may exceed the “non-contact torque sensor” after several replacements.

Unless you have special requirements for the sensor. For example, the frequency response time of the signal acquisition, or the size requirements. Either that or the price. These factors aside, we recommend using a “non-contact torque sensor”.

The “non-contact torque sensor” can also measure rotational speed. Optional RS232/485 communication serial port. The signal can be collected and processed, and the scalability should be strong.

A proximity sensor is a non-contact sensor. When a target enters the sensor’s field, it detects the presence of an object (often called a “target”).

Depending on the type of proximity sensor, the sensor can detect objects using sound, light, infrared radiation (IR), or electromagnetic fields. Proximity sensors are used in phones, recycling plants, self-driving cars, air defense systems and assembly lines.

There are many types of proximity sensors, and they all perceive objects in different ways. The two most commonly used proximity sensors are inductive proximity sensors and capacitive proximity sensors.

Inductive proximity sensors can only detect metal targets. This is because the sensor utilizes electromagnetic fields. When a metal target enters the electromagnetic field, the inductive properties of the metal will change the characteristics of the electromagnetic field, thereby alerting the proximity sensor to the presence of a metal target.

Depending on how sensitive the metal is, targets can be detected at greater or shorter distances.

Capacitive proximity sensors are not limited to metal targets. These proximity sensors are capable of detecting anything that can carry an electrical charge. Capacitive sensors are often used for liquid level detection.

Possible targets for capacitive sensors include, but are not limited to: targets in glass, plastic, water, wood, metal, and countless other materials.

A force-torque (FT) sensor is an electronic device that monitors, detects, records, and regulates linear and rotational forces applied to it.

The main functions of the torque sensor are as follows:

  1. It can measure dynamic torque and static torque. Its detection stability is very good, its anti-interference performance is strong, and its precision is very good;
  2. When measuring, it does not need to adjust zero every time, and can measure the positive and negative torque continuously;
  3. Its signal output can be operated with you, choose pulse wave or waveform – square wave;
  4. Its measurement range is very wide: there are standards from 0 to 1000Nm to choose from, and some non-standard ones, such as: 20,000 Nm, 100,000 Nm, and 1 million Nm can be customized as special ranges;

More About Rotary Torque Transducer

The Rotary Torque Transducer is a sensor with a resistance strain gage as a resistance conversion element. Resistance strain gauges are based on the resistance-strain effect of metal resistance wires. The so-called strain effect refers to a physical phenomenon in which the resistance value of a metal conductor (resistance wire) changes with deformation (elongation or shortening).

A resistance strain gauge is pasted on the elastic body of the dynamic torque sensor to form a Wheatstone bridge. Apply the excitation voltage to the bridge. Under the action of torque, the elastic body deforms. The strain gage thus produces a change in resistance. This makes the bridge unbalanced. The bridge outputs a voltage signal that is linearly related to torque.

There are two speed measurement methods for dynamic torque sensors: photoelectric encoder speed measurement and Hall effect speed measurement.
Both methods output 60 pulses in one revolution of the sensor. Torque measurement sensor, and then convert the pulse into frequency square wave output.

The calibration of the rotary torque transducer can be selected in different ways. Calibration in a calibration laboratory or on-site at a test bench. The task of calibrating sensors, such as those used in power test benches. It has always been to transmit the measured torque into the application.

The simplest is to measure the torque transmission performed directly by a torque sensor that resides in the driveline. This is where the calibration of the torque transducer at the factory calibration facility or other on-site calibration laboratory is cited as a reference.

There is another way to calibrate the torque sensor is dynamic calibration. As a dynamic calibration in the narrow sense, it must be recognized that the torque obtained during calibration changes rapidly with time. It corresponds in its dynamics to possible operating time changes. This requires both the determination of the reference torque and the measurement of the output of the sensor to be calibrated when the torque is continuously changing.

Calibration method and steps of torque sensor:

  1. Calibration preparation: calibration tools (weight assembly, torque connector (for folding testing machine), enamel plate (for automatic torque machine), rotary testing machine, torque handle).
  2. Turn on the industrial control host. Open the test software to ensure that the pressure sensor and the motion card are connected stably. The value jump is within the error (0.01gf.cm-0.03gf).
  3. Assemble the auxiliary connector.
  4. Open the software and select the range corresponding to the sensor. Then open the calibration sensor interface and clear the value when the sensor is unloaded.
  5. Select the appropriate weight according to the range of the sensor. For example, 2N.m selects 200g and 100g weights. Tie the weight to one end of the connecting piece, and hang it on one end of the pulley through the rope along the groove circle of the standard piece. Keep the contact state stable without external force.
  6. Click Calibration on the software calibration interface. Enter the torque value for the calibration weight (gravity * arm) and click OK.
  7. Change the direction to wrap the weight and check the reversal force value. If the difference is large (>0.5gf.cm), take the average of the positive and negative force values.
  8. Record the calibration date, and the tool fills in the equipment sensor calibration record form.
  9. The calibration period is generally one year. If repaired or adjusted during use, recalibrate.

A torque transducer is a device that helps measure how much twisting force is being applied to an object. It’s like a scale that measures how much weight is being applied, but instead of weight, it measures torque.

For example, if you’re trying to tighten a bolt with a wrench, a torque transducer can tell you how much force you’re using to turn the wrench. This can be helpful because over-tightening or under-tightening a bolt can cause problems, so knowing the right amount of torque to use is important.

Torque transducers are used in all sorts of industries, from manufacturing and engineering to automotive and aerospace. They’re helpful for ensuring that machines and equipment are working properly, and for testing the strength and durability of different materials.

Here are the different types of torque transducers:

  1. Strain gauge torque sensors – use tiny wires attached to a metal shaft to measure the twisting force. The changes in resistance can be used to calculate the torque.
  2. Magnetic torque sensors – use magnets to measure the amount of twisting force. The sensor has two parts, one that’s fixed and one that rotates with the object being measured. The changes in the magnetic field can be measured and used to calculate the torque.
  3. Optical torque sensors – use light to measure the twisting force. They work by detecting changes in the polarization or phase of the light as it passes through the material being measured.
  4. Piezoelectric torque sensors – use crystals to generate an electrical charge in response to the force. The charge generated is proportional to the torque being applied.

The type of torque transducer used depends on the specific application and the accuracy and precision required for the measurement.

To measure the torque on a rotating shaft, you can use a torque transducer. A torque transducer is a device that attaches to the shaft and measures the twisting force applied to it.

To measure the torque, you first need to install the torque transducer onto the shaft. This usually involves attaching the sensor to the end of the shaft and making sure it’s securely fastened.

Once the torque transducer is installed, you can start taking measurements. The sensor will detect the twisting force as the shaft rotates, and this information can be displayed on a digital readout or recorded for later analysis.

To get an accurate measurement, it’s important to make sure the torque transducer is properly calibrated and that any external factors that could affect the measurement, such as temperature or vibration, are accounted for.

Overall, measuring torque on a rotating shaft is a relatively simple process that can provide valuable information about the performance and efficiency of a machine or system.

Dynamic Torque Transducers: Principle of Torque Speed Measurement

  1. Principle of torque measurement

The dynamic torque sensor is a sensor with a resistance strain gage as a resistance conversion element.

  1. Principle of rotational speed measurement

Dynamic torque sensors have two speed measurement methods:
Photoelectric code disc speed measurement
Hall Effect Velocimetry.

Both methods output 60 pulses in one revolution of the sensor. The pulse is then converted into a frequency square wave output.

Dynamic torque: It is the peak value displayed in real time during the assembly process when the fastener is tightened. That is, the dynamic torque that the power tool applies to the bolt, overcoming the friction.

The axial preload force for the bolts generated by the dynamic torque meets the engineering requirements for the preload force. Generally, the torque value preset by the tool or equipment is the dynamic torque value.

Static torque: refers to the torque required to overcome static friction after a fastener has been tightened and we continue to rotate in the direction of tightening.

Generally, the peak torque we measure with an analog hand wrench is the static torque.

Learn More About Rotary Torque Sensor

Like many other types of transducers, torque transducers use strain technology to measure. The sensor is usually a metal elastomer with a strain gauge (SG) mounted on it. The strain gauge is firmly attached to the elastomer.

If an external load acts on the sensor, the measuring body will be deformed. The resistance of the strain gauge will also change.
In this way, the magnitude of the load can be measured by the change in resistance. This applies not only to torque sensors, but also to load cells, force sensors and other types of sensors.

  1. Detection of output torque and power of rotating power equipment such as electric motors, engines, and internal combustion engines;
  2. Detection of torque and power of railway locomotives, automobiles, aircraft, ships and other machinery;
  3. Detection of torque required for compressors, water pumps, mixers, transmissions, etc.;
  4. Machine tool processing, rotational speed torque detection and torque control of drilling equipment;
  5. Can be used to make viscometers and torque wrenches;
  6. Various torque power testing equipment and laboratory use;

Torque sensors are also called torque sensors, torque sensors, torque sensors, and torque meters. They are divided into two categories: dynamic torque sensors and static and static torque sensors. Among them, dynamic torque sensors can also be called torque sensors, torque speed sensors, and non-contact torque sensors. sensor, rotational torque sensor, etc.

  1. Dynamic torque sensor/rotational torque sensor

  1. Static torque sensor

In some applications, a static torque sensor can be used to measure the torque measurement made by an in-line rotary sensor at the point where the torque is transmitted to the ground (static torque measurement).

For a given application, static torque sensors (aka torque sensors) are generally not as sophisticated as rotary sensors and are therefore less expensive than rotary sensors.
Static torque transducers are often used as torque calibration tools or torque wrench calibration tools.
Static torque sensors can also be used as miniature electric torque screwdrivers, allowing engineers to obtain torque feedback in real-time, or to study the torque applied during assembly.
