The electrode is in direct contact with the measured medium. Therefore, the selection of electrode material is very important. Commonly used electrode materials are 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy, titanium, tantalum, platinum, etc. The material of the electrode can be selected according to the characteristics of the medium.

Magnetic flow meters for wastewater

According to the situation of the wastewater treatment site, there are two general wastewater discharge methods. One is to discharge through pipes, and the other is to discharge through ditches. The two types of flow meters selected are therefore different.

1.Waste water is used for pipeline discharge, and most of them choose electromagnetic flowmeter to measure. Because there are no obstructions in the sensor, there is no fear of debris in the medium.

1.Corrosion

Corrosion is a phenomenon in which metals are destroyed due to chemical effects in their environment. All metals and alloys can be corrosion resistant in certain specific environments.

But in other environments it is very sensitive to corrosion. Generally speaking, there are no industrial metal materials that are resistant to corrosion in all environments.

Corrosion can be divided into uniform corrosion (uniform corrosion) or general corrosion (general corrosion) and partial corrosion (localized corrosion).

2.Damage to the flowmeter caused by corrosive media

The corrosiveness of the medium is a serious threat to the flowmeter. Only certain types of flow meters such as clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters are less affected by corrosion.

a. Corrosive media will corrode the parts that are in direct contact with the flowmeter. Make it damaged and lose its function. For example, corrosion damage to the diaphragm of the differential pressure transmitter, and complete failure due to leakage of silicone oil. The electrode is corroded, causing the medium to be out of the world, causing the excitation coil to burn out.

b. The parts of the flowmeter are corroded by corrosive media for a long time and the geometric dimensions are changed. Cause the accuracy of the instrument to decrease. For example, after the rotor in the rotameter is corroded by the fluid, the outer dimension is reduced.

As a result, the flow indication is low. Another example is that the vortex generator in the vortex flowmeter is corroded by the fluid and the width is reduced. The appearance of the front flow surface becomes rough, causing changes in the flow coefficient.

There are also clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters that are less affected by corrosive media. It is also often caused by the corrosion of he metal pipe by the medium. It weakens the transmitting and receiving signals, and loses flexibility in severe cases.

c. Shorten the life of the instrument. For example, the conical tube and other parts in the metal tube float flowmeter. After several years, the welds were worn out.

d. Leakage of corrosive media. If it is not discovered and disposed of in time, it will easily lead to safety and personal accidents.

According to long-term inspection, electromagnetic flowmeter and ultrasonic flowmeter are selected for common corrosive liquid measurement. If it is corrosive gas, you can choose acid-resistant stainless steel vortex flowmeter or other gas flowmeter.

The electromagnetic flowmeter for measuring liquid media can measure various corrosive media containing tiny particles. Of course, the premise is that the measured medium is conductive. 3.Measures for fluid corrosion in flow measurement

(1) Change the instrument regularly

Corrosive media can corrode metals in various conditions. Some corrosion rate is very fast, that is, full corrosion. Some corrosion is subtle, very slow, that is, partial corrosion. When making instrument selection, it should be analyzed in detail according to the detailed situation. Then make a decision.

For example, compressed air and water are generally considered to be non-corrosive, but they are not. Because the concentration of nitrogen and oxygen compounds in the atmosphere in urban areas is generally higher. When it is absorbed by the condensate in the compressed air. The condensate is acidic. Thereby it has slight corrosion to carbon steel materials.

This situation is more serious in plant areas such as sulfuric acid plants, nitric acid plants, and chlor-alkali plants. Of course, in addition to dilute nitric acid, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid may be contained in the compressed air at this time. The water situation is similar. Especially river water. At this time, a problem arises. Is it possible to design and select the annular chamber and the front and rear straight pipe sections in the throttling installation to be changed to stainless steel?

Of course, if it is changed to stainless steel. The corrosion problem of the annular chamber and straight pipe section will certainly be solved, but at the same time the investment has increased. And the increase in investment is related to the pipe diameter. If the nominal diameter is larger. The increase in technology capital is not a small number.

Therefore, the decision-making should be based on the measurement accuracy request of the detailed measurement point, the severity level of corrosion, the life expectancy, and the budget acceptance ability. Weigh the pros and cons, and control responsively.

If the measurement accuracy is not high. Such as for process monitoring and control. Slightly corroded, carbon steel materials can also be used for many years. After the change to stainless steel, the investment increased more. Then, it’s better to wait for the ring chamber to be corroded and unable to continue to be used. Then update the entire or damaged part of the throttling installation.

(2) Avoid the heavy

Avoiding the heavy and the light is based on a deep understanding of the process flow and the characteristics of the relevant media. Choose a measurement plan reasonably. It can also achieve the purpose of metering or stopping control of the consumption process. Avoid highly corrosive parts. And choose the less corrosive part. Even change the variety of adjusted parameters.

For example, the flow rate constant value adjustment system can be replaced by liquid level average adjustment or other suitable variable adjustment. So as to avoid the problem of corrosion resistance of flow measuring instruments.

For example, the flow of sewage into sewage treatment plants must be measured. In order to control the total discharge of pollutants. The sewage is generally acidic or alkaline. And correspondingly, an appropriate amount of alkali or acid should be added to neutralize it. Then, consider the corrosion of sewage to the flow meter. The flow measurement of raw gas also has a similar situation. Raw gas often contains a certain amount of sulfur dioxide. This gas is not very corrosive in boring hours. (3) Choose an instrument with corrosion resistance

①The instrument selection of common acid medium.

In the vortex flow sensor and turbine flow sensor, the part in contact with the fluid is acid-resistant steel. Ordinary acidic liquids and gases can be used.

②The instrument selection of conductive liquid.

There are many kinds of lining materials for measuring tube of electromagnetic flowmeter.

Among them, the good corrosion resistance is polytetrafluoroethylene. There are also several kinds of electrode materials, which can meet the needs of most corrosive media.

When selecting electrode materials, the requirements should be met. Don’t be superstitious about precious metals. Because precious metals are not omnipotent.

Other catalysts like platinum electrodes have also attracted people’s attention. In chemical consumption, platinum is a very good catalyst. Certain media react chemically after contact with platinum under certain conditions. Proven hydrogen peroxide. The platinum electrode electromagnetic flowmeter is measuring hydrogen peroxide. ③The instrument selection of non-conductive liquid.

There are two types of clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters according to their principles. Jet lag and Doppler.

The time difference method is suitable for clean single-phase fluids. The accuracy is related to pipe diameter and flow rate.
E.g:
a. When pipe diameter>150mm, v>0.3m/s, the uncertainty is ±2%R (it can reach ±1% R after calibration). v ≤0.3m/s, the uncertainty is ±O.Olm/s.
b. When the pipe diameter is ≤150mm, v>0.3m/s, the uncertainty is ±5%. v≤0.3m/s, the uncertainty is ±0.05m/s.

The Doppler flowmeter is suitable for liquids with high solid content or bubbles. The uncertainty can only reach ±1%~±10%. Obviously much lower than the electromagnetic flowmeter. Therefore, use it only when there is no other better method. The price has nothing to do with the pipe diameter. When DN≤200, ultrasonic meters are more expensive than electromagnetic flowmeters. When DN≥250, the ultrasonic flowmeter is cheaper than the electromagnetic flowmeter.

④ Selection of corrosive gas instruments

a. Ultrasonic flow meter.

Choice of installation environment

  1. It should be installed at the lower part of the horizontal pipeline and vertically upwards, avoid installing at the highest point of the pipeline and vertically downwards;
  2. It should be installed on the rising part of the pipeline;
  3. Installation in the open discharge pipe should be installed at the lower part of the pipe;
  4. If the pipeline drop exceeds 5m, install an exhaust valve downstream of the sensor;
  5. The control valve and shut-off valve should be installed downstream of the sensor, not upstream of the sensor;
  6. The sensor must not be installed at the inlet and outlet of the pump, it should be installed at the outlet of the pump.
  7. Keep away from equipment with strong fields, such as large motors and large transformers.
  8. There should be no strong vibration in the installation place, and the pipeline should be firmly fixed. The ambient temperature should not change much.
  9. The installation environment should be easy to install and maintain.

Choice of installation location

The installation location must ensure that the pipeline is always filled with the fluid under test.
Choose a place where the fluid flow pulse is small, that is, away from the pump, valves, elbows and other local resistance parts.

When measuring two-phase (solid, liquid or gas, liquid) fluids, choose a place that is not easy to cause phase separation.

Avoid negative pressure at the measurement site.

The diameter or circumference of the side pipe is easy to measure, and the ovality should be small.

Length of straight pipe

The length of the straight pipe section on the upstream side of the sensor installation pipeline should be greater than or equal to 10D, and the downstream side should be no less than 5D (D is the diameter of the pipeline being tested).

The flow control valve should be installed on the pipe under test on the upstream side of the sensor, and the flow control valve should be installed on the downstream side of the sensor. When measuring, usually the flow control valve should be fully open.

Installation method

Vertical installation, when the sensor is inserted into the pipeline, it should be perpendicular to the central axis of the pipeline, and the included angle with the pipe section is less than 50. It is suitable for measuring clean media with small pipeline vibration.

There are two ways to insert the insertion point of the electromagnetic flow sensor. One is to insert at 1/4 of the inner diameter of the pipe. The other is to insert at 1/2 of the inner diameter of the pipe.

Correctly weld the mounting base to the pipe. Clean up welding slag and burrs on the mounting base of the pipe under test.

Turn off the upstream flow control valve or use a low-pressure water supply.

Install the DN50 ball valve on the mounting base. Note that the long cavity of the ball valve faces upwards. Check whether the ball valve can be fully opened and closed. If there is any problem, repair it. Install the compression threaded seat, compression nut and rubber sealing ring on the ball valve. Loosen the positioning screw and the compression nut, and insert the sensor through the ball valve into the pipe under test. Tighten the compression nut and the positioning screw, and at the same time, pay attention to the insertion direction of the sensor direction sign and the fluid flow direction.

Insertion depth

(1) When selecting the electrode to insert to the average flow rate, the average flow rate point is about H=0.25D from the pipe wall (D: pipe inner diameter) according to the pipeline turbulent flow conditions. Press the handle to make the insertion rod enter the pipe H deep. (L2 at this time = original L2-H)

(2) After confirming that the insertion depth is correct, turn the flow direction rod to make its connection parallel to the centerline of the pipeline. At this time, the connection between the two electrodes will be perpendicular to the centerline of the pipeline. That is, the connection between the electrodes is perpendicular to the flow rate.

(3) After adjustment, first tighten the lock nut firmly, and then tighten the three locknuts separately. One of their functions is to ensure that the insertion rod is not pushed out by the pressure in the tube. The other is to ensure that the insertion rod does not vibrate.

(4) During actual on-site installation, the insertion depth is only allowed to be 0.25D, which is a quarter of the diameter of the pipe. The insertion depth is 0.5D, which is the center of the pipe.

(5) Loosen the fastening screws under the junction box. Rotate the junction box to the position you are satisfied with and tighten the nuts.

KLD electromagnetic water flowmeter can be used to measure the volume flow of conductive fluid in a closed pipeline. Magnetic Water Flow Meter to Measure Industrial Water

The conductivity of industrial water and its aqueous solution is greater than 10-4S/cm. The conductivity of acid, alkali and salt solution is between 10-4~10-1S/cm, so there is no problem in use. Low distilled water is 10-5S/cm and there is no problem.

The electromagnetic flowmeter cannot measure liquids with very low conductivity. Such as petroleum products and organic solvents. Cannot measure gas, steam and liquids containing more and larger bubbles.

It is found from the data that some pure liquids or aqueous solutions have low conductivity and are considered unusable. However, in actual work, we will encounter examples that can be used because of impurities. Such impurities are beneficial to increase conductivity.

What is a Magmeter?

Magmeter is a volumetric flow meter that measures the flow of conductive fluid in a closed pipeline. Magmeter is also called electromagnetic flow meter, magnetic flow sensor, magnetic flow meter, etc. Magmeters is based on electromagnetic induction technology and outputs 4-20mA and other signals. Used in wastewater treatment, sewage treatment, chemical plants, etc.

Structure of Magmeter

First, let us look at the structure of the magmeter.

The structure of electromagnetic flowmeter is mainly composed of magnetic circuit system, measuring catheter, electrode, shell, lining and converter.

Magnetic flow meter principle

The electromagnetic flowmeter is made according to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. It is used to measure the volume flow of conductive liquid.

Faraday’s law of induction (referring to the induction of an electric potential inside the conductor when the conductor passes through a magnetic field) is the basic principle of electromagnetic flowmeter measurement.

This measurement principle can be applied to conductive fluids.

The fluid flows into a pipe whose magnetic field is perpendicular to the direction of the fluid, and the electric potential induced in the fluid can be measured using two symmetrically arranged electrodes.

The signal voltage UE is proportional to the magnetic induction intensity B, the electrode spacing D and the average fluid velocity v.

Because the magnetic induction intensity B and the electrode spacing D are constant. Therefore, the signal voltage UE is proportional to the average flow velocity v.

The equation used to calculate the volume flow rate shows that the signal voltage UE is linearly proportional to the volume flow rate.

The sensed signal voltage is converted into the graduation in the converter, analog and digital output signals.

Magmeter flowmeters measure the velocity of conductive liquids (such as water, acid, caustic and slurry) in the pipeline. When measuring deionized water, the minimum conductivity of the medium is 20uS/cm. For most liquids, the minimum conductivity required for measurement can be 5uS/cm.

Magmeter is mainly used in the following areas:

  • Measure clean water, sewage, domestic water, raw water;
  • Various acid, alkali, salt and other solutions;
  • Mud, mineral pulp, paper pulp, and food liquids, etc.;
  • It is widely used in metallurgy, papermaking, water treatment, chemical industry, light industry, textile, food and beverage, catering, agricultural irrigation, hydropower station, oil production, electric power and mining industries.

Magmeter liner selection should be selected according to the corrosiveness, abrasiveness and temperature of the measured medium.

  • Hard/soft rubber is resistant to general weak acid and alkali corrosion. Temperature resistance is 65℃. Soft rubber has abrasion resistance.
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is almost resistant to strong acid and alkali corrosion except hot phosphoric acid. The temperature of the medium can reach 130℃. But it is not resistant to wear.
  • Polyurethane rubber has good wear resistance. But it is not resistant to acid and alkali corrosion. Temperature resistance is also poor. The medium temperature is less than 65°C.

Magmeter flowmeter, especially the flowmeter with intelligent LCD screen. The installation position should avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. The ambient temperature should be between 5℃~55℃.

2.Avoid strong interference sources

Choose a place where there is no strong electromagnetic field radiation to install the flowmeter.

Avoid devices that can easily cause electromagnetic interference, such as motors, transformers, and frequency converters.

3.Magmeter straight run

Pay attention to avoid eddy current generating parts as much as possible. Such as various valves, elbows, bypasses, etc.

Try to extend the straight pipe section upstream and downstream of the flowmeter. Install a rectifier tube if necessary.

Ensure that the upstream straight pipe section of the flowmeter must be at least 5 DN (measurement pipe diameter). The downstream is guaranteed to be more than 2 DN.

4.The conductivity of the liquid must be uniform and stable

Do not install the flowmeter in a place where the conductivity of the fluid to be measured is extremely uneven.
If different media are injected upstream, the conductivity will be uneven and will affect the measurement.

In this case, it is recommended to move the injection port downstream.

If it must be injected from upstream, it should be as far away from the flowmeter as possible. Generally, it is better to keep a distance of more than 20 DN. To ensure that the liquid is fully mixed and uniform.

5.Keep the electrode axis level

The plane of the intermittent measuring electrode must be kept level. This prevents short-term insulation between the two electrodes due to air bubbles.

6.Magmeter grounding rings

Since the induction signal of the electromagnetic flowmeter is very weak, it is susceptible to noise. Therefore, the reference potential of the sensor and the converter must be the same as the measured liquid, and be grounded together.

The purpose of installing grounding rings or grounding electrodes on both sides of the electromagnetic flowmeter is to establish the equipotentiality between the flowmeter casing and the liquid.

Ordinary metal pipe (generally no need to install grounding ring)

When the pipeline itself is well grounded, the grounding wire can be omitted, but the casing must be connected to the liquid through the grounding wire equipped with the flowmeter.

Insulated pipes (plastic pipes, rubber-lined pipes, etc.)

A grounding ring (or grounding electrode) should be installed at both ends of the sensor and the measured medium should be short-circuited with the earth through the grounding wire.

Cathodic protection pipeline

The pipe flanges are connected by copper wires, but they must be insulated from the grounding wire.

Magnetic flowmeter is a widely used flow measuring instrument. How should we calibrate it?

Let’s take a look at the calibration method of electromagnetic flowmeter:

  1. Determine the corresponding water pump according to the pipe diameter and flow rate of the verification test;
  2. After the flowmeter is correctly installed and connected, it should be energized and preheated for about 30 minutes in accordance with the requirements of the verification regulations;
  3. If the high-level tank water source is used, check whether the overflow signal of the stabilized water tower appears. Before the formal test, use the verification medium to circulate in the pipeline system for a certain period of time. At the same time, check whether there is any leakage in the sealing parts of the pipeline;
  4. The verification medium should be filled with the electromagnetic flowmeter sensor before the formal verification. Then the downstream valve should be closed to adjust the zero position;
  5. At the beginning of the verification, open the valve at the front of the pipeline and slowly open the valve behind the electromagnetic flowmeter to adjust the flow at the verification point.
  6. During the calibration process, the flow stability of each flow point should be within 1% to 2%-flow method. The total amount law can be within 5%.
    • The temperature change of the verification medium should not exceed 1℃ when the verification process of a flow point is completed. It should not exceed 5℃ when the entire verification process is completed.
    • There must be a sufficiently high pressure downstream of the electromagnetic flowmeter to be checked to ensure that no flashing and cavitation occur in the flow pipeline;
  7. After the test, close the valve at the front end of the test pipeline. Then stop the pump to avoid emptying the voltage stabilization facility. At the same time, the remaining verification medium in the test pipeline must be vented and the control system and the air compressor must be closed.
