Features of Helical Gear-PD Flow Meter

How does a PD meter work?

The flow meter is mainly composed of a body, a pair of spiral rotors, a magnetic coupling, a reduction mechanism, an adjusting gear, a counter and a signalling device.

The number of revolutions of the spiral rotor is transmitted to the meter head counter through a reduction mechanism composed of a magnetic coupling and a series of gears.

The magnetic coupling is mainly composed of active magnetic steel and driven magnetic steel. The use of magnetic coupling can increase the working pressure and working temperature of the flowmeter, ensure safe operation, and reduce maintenance work.

The measurement chamber mainly has a sealed cavity formed by a pair of special rotors and cover plates as the flow measurement unit.

The rotor is driven by the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the flowmeter to rotate, so as to continuously measure the liquid at the inlet to the outlet after being measured in the sealed cavity.

The amount of liquid flowing through each revolution is eight times that of the sealed cavity in the figure. The total number of rotor rotations and the speed of rotation are transmitted to the counting mechanism by the sealed coupling. Then there is pointer display and word wheel accumulation, you can know that it passes through the pipeline Total amount of liquid.

A pulse transmitter can also be installed in the counting mechanism, which becomes a flow meter with a signal.

Matching with the company’s electric display instrument, it can realize remote transmission (quantity, accumulation, instant and other functions) automatic measurement and control.

Gear types of PD flowmeter:

SPUR GEAR

In Spur gear positive displacement flow meters, fluid travels around two round gears and is pushed through the meter’s internal chamber from inlet to outlet. The discrete volume of liquid trapped between each gear tooth is measured, as opposed to the Oval gear meter where a much larger volume between gears is swept through the chamber.

HELICAL GEAR

Possibly the most accurate PD meter in which two intersecting cylindrical bores are fitted with two interlocking helical screw-shaped gears. Because gear orientation is inline with flow, as the fluid passes through, the gears rotate with very little pressure drop. These flow meters are highly accurate over wide flow ranges and are compatible with very high viscosity fluids.

ROTARY PISTON

In this design a rotary piston oscillates in the circular internal chamber displacing a fixed amount of fluid with each rotation. This style accommodates ultra low flows and high flows, as well as high pressures.

Features of Micro Flow Meter

Quantitative control of micro liquid flow & flow monitoring.

The standard minimum flow rate of the micro flowmeter is 0.5ml/min.

The standard accuracy of the micro flowmeter is 0.5%. The cutting accuracy of the CNC machining center is 0.001mm.
For high viscosity media, such as glue, the accuracy can reach 0.2%.

The maximum range ratio of the standard product is 1:200, and the minimum range ratio is 1:100
The new M2.1 is the latest research and development. The flow range is 1~800ml/min, and the turndown ratio reaches 1~800.
To meet more working conditions, it is more suitable for test bench working conditions.

The Micro Flow Meter we supply is a gear flow meter.

Gear flow transmitter belongs to volumetric flowmeter and measure volume and flow precisely. The flowing medium makes the gear engage and rotate.

Under the flowing effect of fluid, pressure difference is formed between the inlet and outlet of instrument. One pair of gears can rotate freely without the need of power supply. The empty cavity between gears is filled with liquid, which is discharged through rotation.

The liquid flowing through instrument and liquid flow can be known through measuring the number of revolutions of gear.

The rotation speed of the transmitter is detected by the sensing coil inside the signal amplifier on the case.

The signal amplifier cannot touch the measured medium. Due to the cutting of the transmitter gear, the magnetic field lines generated inside the permanent magnet inside the housing will cause the magnetic flux inside the induction coil to change.

The sensing coil sends the signal of flux change cycle detected to the pre-amplifier so as to amplify and shape the signal.

The impulse signal which is in direct ratio with flow velocity will be sent to the unit conversion and flow integration circuit. To obtain and display the accumulative flow valve.

At the same time, it will also send the impulse signal to frequency current conversion circuit. To convert the impulse signal to simulation amperage so as to display the instantaneous flow value.
The transmitter has high processing precision and can be installed precisely.

The gear rotation undergoes non-contact scanning. One impulse is generated by one gear with very high resolution. The column gear transmission can measure the liquid with very small flow and small quantitative volume.

High temperature oil measurement

The micro flowmeter can be customized for high temperature.

Since the material is all stainless steel 3161, the maximum temperature can be customized to 200°C.

The commonly used custom temperature is 120°C.

Applicable working conditions: hot melt adhesive; heat transfer oil and other high-temperature working conditions.

High-pressure measurement

The micro flowmeter can be customized for high pressure.

By strengthening the shell, more bolts are added to achieve the function of high-pressure resistance.

The material itself is stainless steel is also a prerequisite for achieving high pressure.

The maximum high pressure of 1000Bar can be customized.

In the case of high pressure resistance, the service life and low-cost after-sales service are guaranteed at the same time.

In principle, a positive displacement flow meter is a hydraulic engine that absorbs a small amount of energy from a fluid.

This energy is used to overcome the frictional force of the rotation of the flow detection element and the accessories, and at the same time form a pressure drop at the inflow and outflow ends of the meter.

The working principle of a typical Positive displacement flow meter (elliptical gear type) is shown in the figure.

Positive displacement flow meter advantages and disadvantages

  • Positive displacement flow meter measurement accuracy is high, the basic error is generally ±0.5%R, and special ones can reach ±0.2%R or higher. Usually used in expensive media or occasions requiring precise measurement.
  • Positive displacement flow meter has no effect on the measurement accuracy when the flow velocity field of the rotating flow and the pipe choke is distorted, and there is no requirement for the front straight pipe section. This is of great significance in field use.
  • Positive displacement flow meter can be used to measure high viscosity fluids. The range is wide, generally 10:1 to 5:1, and special can reach 30:1 or more.
  • Positive displacement flow meter is a direct-reading instrument, no external energy is needed, and the cumulative total can be directly obtained, which is clear and easy to operate.
  • In the indirect method of mass flow measurement combined with volumetric flowmeters, PDF is compared with volumetric flowmeters derived from velocity equations. The volume is a direct geometric quantity, and the influencing factors of volumetric quantity are simpler.
  • In the measurement of high-pressure natural gas that is not suitable for density meter measurement, the compression coefficient of difficult gas can be obtained indirectly with PDF.
  • The Positive displacement flow meter structure is complex, bulky, and heavy, especially the larger-diameter Positive displacement flow meter is bulky, so it is generally only suitable for small and medium-sized.
  • Compared with other types of general flow meters (such as differential pressure, float, electromagnetic), PDF’s measured medium types, medium working conditions (temperature, pressure), and caliber limitations are larger, and the application range is narrow.
  • Due to the thermal expansion and deformation of parts at high temperatures, and the brittleness of materials at low temperatures, Positive displacement flow meter is generally not suitable for high and low temperatures. The current usable temperature range is roughly -30~+160℃, and the maximum pressure is 10MPa.
  • Most PDF instruments are only suitable for clean single-phase fluids. When particles and dirt are contained, a filter must be installed upstream, which will increase pressure loss and increase maintenance. If measuring liquids containing gas, a gas separator must be installed.
  • Positive displacement flow meter security is poor. If the detection moving parts are stuck, the fluid cannot pass through, and the cut-off pipe system cannot be used. However, some structural designs (such as Instromet’s waist wheel flowmeter) have a built-in bypass in the housing. When the detection moving element is stuck, the fluid can pass through the bypass.
  • Some forms of Positive displacement flow meter instruments (such as oval gear type, waist wheel type, rotary piston type, etc.) will bring pulsation to the flow during the measurement process. Larger caliber instruments will also produce noise, and even pipe vibration.

Types of positive displacement flow meter

Positive displacement (PD) flow meters are volumetric flow measurement instruments. They are ideal for low flow rates, high viscosity fluids, and flow measurement involving start and stop or pulses.

Positive displacement flow meters are similar in design to gear pumps. However, the principle of operation is the opposite. It is not the gear that drives the fluid, but the fluid that drives the gear.

The non-intrusive Hall effect sensor detects the movement of the gear. When each gear tooth passes the sensor, a square wave pulse is generated and a discrete volume of liquid is measured. Features of Liquid asphalt flow measurement

Asphalt is solid at room temperature, but at a certain temperature, asphalt is liquid. And it is a liquid with high viscosity. It is usually measured by an oval gear flowmeter. It is especially suitable for measuring medium with high viscosity, and it is not sensitive to the change of the viscosity of the liquid being measured.

Liquid asphalt flow measurement

The accuracy can reach 0.5 level.

  1. Different connection methods:

Target type asphalt flow meter can be made into clip type connection, pipe segment type connection, plug-in connection. Choose the appropriate connection method according to the size of the pipe diameter.

The oval gear asphalt flow meter can only be made into a pipe segment connection. If the pipe diameter is large, it is not recommended to choose an oval gear asphalt flow meter.

Oval Gear flow meter Troubleshooting

The following introduces the seven common faults and treatment methods of oval gear flow meters.

Oval gear does not rotate

The reason:

  1. There is debris in the pipeline;
  2. The filter is damaged and debris enters the meter, causing the gear to be stuck;
  3. Due to excessive flow and wear of the bearings, the oval gears collide with the inner bore, causing the gears to jam.

Approach:

  1. Clean the flow meter and pipeline;
  2. Repair the filter;
  3. Replace the bearing to ensure flexible operation of the gap.

The oval gear rotates, the pointer does not move or stops at all times

The reason:

  1. The rotating fastener is sliding, damaged or inflexible;
  2. The magnetic coupling slides;
  3. The character wheel parts are stuck.

Approach:

  1. Retighten the fasteners and remove inflexible parts;
  2. Check whether the magnetic coupling is flexible and magnetic;
  3. Eliminate the faults of the character wheel components.

Large negative error of flowmeter

The reason:

  1. Leakage of bypass valve;
  2. The inner wall or bearing of the oval gear metering is damaged or corroded by wear;
  3. The flow is lower than the lower limit;
  4. Magnetic coupling sliding or periodic obstacles in gear system;
  5. The actual liquid viscosity is less than the detected liquid viscosity.

Approach:

  1. Check the bypass valve;
  2. Replace bearings, check gears, and adjust gaps;
  3. Increase the flow;
  4. Repair or replace the magnetic coupling or gear system;
  5. Check the flow meter or make the viscosity correction by selecting the inspection liquid close to the actual liquid viscosity.

Large positive error of flowmeter

The reason:

  1. The flow has large pulsation or contains gas;
  2. The actual liquid viscosity is greater than the test liquid viscosity;
  3. When the inlet valve is closed, the medium does not fill the metering chamber and is measured out.

Approach:

  1. Reduce flow pulsation or increase gas separator;
  2. Choose a test liquid with a viscosity similar to the actual liquid to inspect the flow meter or make a viscosity correction;
  3. Use the flow meter outlet valve to control the medium flow.

The indicated value of the secondary meter is more than that of the primary meter

This fault is mostly caused by the vibration of the transmitting blade, which can be solved by appropriately adjusting the pressure of the damping plate on the blade.

The indicated value of the secondary meter is less than the indicated value of the primary meter

The reason:

  1. The fastening screws at the sending blade are loose;
  2. The transmitter dropped.

Approach:

  1. Tighten the locking screw;
  2. Adjust the gap between the transmitting blade and the transmitting device.

Secondary table does not indicate

The reason:

  1. The line is open or short;
  2. The transmitter is damaged.

Approach:

  1. Check the line carefully;
  2. Replace the transmitter.

    6.Flow control valve should be installed at the inlet of the Flowmeter, and open and close valve is installed at the outlet. When using open and close valve, start slowly, do not suddenly open to prevent “water hammer” phenomenon.
  5. Before installing the flowmeter on the new pipeline, the pipeline needs to be flushed, and the straight pipe section (instead of the position of the Flowmeter) is used to prevent welding slag, sundries and so on from entering the flowmeter.
  6. It is strictly forbidden to check the flowmeter of cast iron and steel with water.
  7. The flow size of the flowmeter in use shall not exceed the technical requirements. The flowmeter operates at a maximum flow rate of 50-80%.

Flow nozzle is also called a standard nozzle flow meter, standard nozzle, ISA1932 nozzle. It is a differential pressure flow meter suitable for high temperature and high-pressure fluid measurement.

Flow nozzle, like standard orifice plate, venturi tube flowmeter, and venturi nozzle, belongs to the standard throttling device specified by national standards. Working principle of nozzle flowmeter

The nozzle measurement is based on the throttling principle of fluid mechanics.

When the fluid-filled with the pipe flows through the nozzle in the pipe, the flow beam will form a local contraction at the nozzle, thus accelerating the flow rate and reducing the static pressure.

Then in the nozzle before and after the pressure drop or called pressure difference. The greater the flow rate of the medium, the greater the pressure difference before and after the nozzle.

According to the relationship between the square root of the pressure difference and the flow rate, the differential pressure meter is used to measure the pressure difference to determine the fluid flow rate.

Advantage:

Disadvantages:

  3. Generally used as standard devices.

Flow Nozzle for Steam Flow Measurement

Steam flow meters are widely used in petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, pharmaceutical, electric power, papermaking and other industries to measure steam flow.

Oval Gear-Marine Fuel Flow Meter features

  1. The measurement has nothing to do with the fluid flow state. This is because the oval gear flowmeter relies on the pressure head of the measured medium to push the oval gear to rotate for measurement.
  2. The greater the viscosity of the medium, the smaller the leakage from the gear and the metering gap. Therefore, the larger the sticky skin of the measuring medium, the smaller the leakage error, and the more beneficial it is to the measurement.
  3. High measuring accuracy. It is suitable for flow measurement of high viscosity medium. But it is not suitable for fluids containing solid particles. Solid particles will jam the gears, making it impossible to measure flow. If the measured liquid medium contains gas, it will also cause measurement errors.

If the measured liquid contains solid particles and other impurities, you can install a filter first for filtering.

Oval gear flowmeter (also known as displacement flowmeter, gear flowmeter) is a kind of positive displacement flowmeter, and it is a kind of high precision flowmeter.

Oval gear flow meters utilize mechanical measuring elements to continuously divide the fluid into a single known volume fraction. The total flow volume is measured based on the number of times the metering chamber fills and discharges that volume fraction sequentially and repeatedly.

High-viscosity liquid means that the liquid is viscous and thick, which is different from general liquids and non-Newtonian fluids (mud, pulp). The activity is slow and it is very difficult to filter by simple methods.

Oval Gear High Viscosity Flow Meter

The oval gear flowmeter is particularly suitable for measuring high viscosity media. And it is not sensitive to changes in the viscosity of the liquid being measured.

The measurement of the oval gear flowmeter has nothing to do with the flow state of the fluid. The higher the viscosity of the medium, the smaller the leakage from the gear and the metering gap. It is well known that the oval gear flowmeter is particularly suitable for the flow measurement of high viscosity media such as heavy oil, polyvinyl alcohol, and resin.

The oval gear High Viscosity Flow Meter has high measurement accuracy and is suitable for the measurement of the flow of high-viscosity media (generally the viscosity of the measured liquid is 2-3000Mpa.s).

But it is not suitable for fluids containing solid particles. If the measured liquid medium contains gas, it will also cause measurement errors.

Usually, the accuracy of the oval gear flowmeter can reach 0.5 grade, the highest is 0.2 grade, which is a relatively accurate flow meter.

However, if the flow of the measured medium is too small when in use, the leakage error of the oval gear flowmeter will be prominent, and sufficient measurement accuracy cannot be guaranteed.

The clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter is not in contact with the medium and is based on the principle of ultrasonic flowmeter. In this way, the ultrasonic flowmeter is basically not affected by conductivity, pressure, temperature and viscosity.

Measuring principle of Oval Gear High Viscosity Flow Meter

When the measured liquid enters the oval gear flowmeter through the pipeline. The pressure difference generated at the inlet and outlet pushes a pair of gears to continuously rotate. The liquid measured by the lunar cavity is continuously delivered to the outlet. The product of the number of revolutions of the elliptical gear and four times the displacement per time is the total amount of the measured liquid flow.

Therefore, it is not difficult for us to find from the measurement principle of the oval gear flowmeter that it relies on the pressure head of the measured medium to push the oval gear to rotate for measurement, and has nothing to do with the fluid flow state.

For fluids with solid particles, oval gear flowmeters are not suitable. Because the solid particles will jam the gears, the flow cannot be measured.

It should also be noted that the use of oval gear flowmeters is not recommended for media with gas in the liquid. Its measurement error will be quite large.

When we use oval gear flow meters to measure liquids with high viscosity, there is less leakage from the gap between the gear and the metering.

Therefore, the greater the viscosity of the liquid being measured, the smaller the leakage error, and the more beneficial it is for the measurement, the higher the measurement accuracy.
It can be said that the oval gear flowmeter is the best choice for measuring the flow of high-viscosity liquids.

Installation and use of Oval Gear High Viscosity Flow Meter

  1. The oval gear flowmeter should be equipped with a filter, and the arrows on the two shells point to the same flow direction.
  2. When the measured liquid contains gas, a gas separator should be installed before the flowmeter.
  3. Regardless of whether the pipeline is installed vertically or horizontally, the oval gear shaft in the flowmeter is installed in a horizontal position. (That is, the dial should be perpendicular to the ground).
  4. When the oval gear flowmeter is installed correctly, if it is difficult to see the reading, the counter can be turned 180° or 90°.
  5. Before installing the new flowmeter, use a bamboo stick to push the gear from the exit several times. If it is found to be immobile, it can be soaked with gasoline. (Avoid memory deposits after factory inspection)
  6. The throttle valve should be installed at the inlet of the flowmeter, and the opening/closing valve should be installed at the outlet. When using the opening/closing valve, it should be pneumatically operated slowly and not suddenly open.
  7. It is strictly forbidden to use line sweeping steam to pass through the flow meter.
  8. In continuous use, the flowmeter must be equipped with a bypass pipe.
  9. Before installing the oval gear flowmeter, the pipeline must be flushed. When flushing, use a straight pipe section (instead of the oval flowmeter position) to prevent welding slag and debris from entering the flowmeter.
  10. It is strictly forbidden to check the flowmeter composed of cast iron and cast steel with water.
  11. When the flowmeter is in use, the flow rate shall not exceed the technical requirements. It is better for the flowmeter to work at 50~80% of the maximum flow.
  12. If the measured liquid is chemically corrosive, a stainless steel flow meter or Ocr15Ni12MO2Ti flow meter must be used.
  13. The installation method of oval gear flowmeter is as shown in the figure.

Pointer Type Oval Gear Flow Meter Applications

LC series oval gear flowmeter is equipped with on-site pointer display and word wheel cumulative counting device, which can directly display the cumulative flow of liquid flowing through the pipeline. For different liquids (acid, alkali, salt, organic solution, etc.), the flowmeter can be made of different materials (cast iron, cast steel, stainless steel, etc.). It is suitable for flow measurement in industrial sectors such as petroleum, chemical industry, transportation, commerce, food, medicine and health.

  • The LC-A cast iron oval gear flowmeter is widely used in the measurement of various oil products and non-corrosive liquid media on cast iron.

Structure and working principle of Oval Gear Flow Meter

The oval gear flowmeter is composed of a metering box and a pair of elliptical gears installed in the metering box, and the upper and lower cover plates form a sealed crescent-shaped cavity (due to the rotation of the gear, it is not sealed) as the calculation unit of a displacement .

The flow meter is mainly composed of a housing, a counter, an elliptical gear, and a coupling (magnetic coupling and axial coupling), etc. As shown in the figure.

When the measured liquid enters the flowmeter through the pipeline, the pressure difference generated at the inlet and outlet pushes a pair of gears to continuously rotate, and the liquid measured by the crescent-shaped cavity is continuously transported to the outlet. The product of four times the secondary displacement is the total amount of the measured liquid flow.

The elliptical gear generates a torque to make it rotate under the action of the pressure difference △p of the measured medium.

The rotor 1 and the rotor 2 are alternately driven by one to rotate the other. There are two magnets on each rotor as signal generating elements. There is a magnetic signal detecting element at the center of the two axes at the bottom of the cavity. Whenever the magnet turns to the detecting element, the sensor counts as a pulse.

Each pulse corresponds to a certain amount of medium discharge F, F=XXml/p, so the volume flow Qm per unit time can be obtained: Qm=F*H, F is the amount of medium removed by each pulse; H pulse per unit time number.

Volumetric flow meter working principle

The positive displacement flow meter is a flow meter that uses mechanical measuring elements to continuously divide the fluid into a single known volume, and repeatedly fill and discharge the volume of fluid to accumulate the total amount of fluid.

Volumetric flow measurement uses a fixed small volume to repeatedly measure the volume of fluid passing through the flowmeter.

Therefore, there must be a standard volume of space inside the positive displacement flowmeter, which is usually called the “metering space” or “metering chamber” of the positive displacement flowmeter.

This space is formed by the inner wall of the instrument case and the rotating parts of the flowmeter.

The working principle of a positive displacement flow meter is: fluid passing through the flow meter will produce a certain pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the flow meter.

The rotating part of the flowmeter (referred to as the rotor) rotates under the action of this pressure difference, and discharges the fluid from the inlet to the outlet.

In this process, the fluid fills the “metering space” of the flowmeter again and again, and then is continuously sent to the outlet.

Under the conditions of a given flow meter, the volume of the metering space is determined. As long as the number of rotations of the rotor is measured, the cumulative value of the volume of fluid passing through the flow meter can be obtained.
