Gear flow meter working principle
Gear flow transmitter is a type of positive displacement flow transmitter. It is a high-precision transmitter for measuring volume flow.
With the flow of the medium, the gears mesh and rotate. Under the action of the fluid flow, a pressure difference is formed at both ends of the instrument inlet and outlet. There is no need for a power supply. A pair of gears rotate freely. The cavity between the gears is filled with liquid. Discharge and measure the number of revolutions of the gear to know the flow of liquid and liquid flowing through the instrument.
The rotation speed of the round gear transmitter is detected by the sensor coil in the signal amplifier mounted on the watch case. The signal amplifier is not in contact with the measured medium. When the transmitter gear cuts the magnetic field lines generated by the permanent magnet in the housing, it will cause the magnetic flux in the sensing coil to change.
The sensing coil sends the detected magnetic flux periodic change signal to the preamplifier, amplifies and reshapes the signal, generates a pulse signal proportional to the flow rate, and sends it to the unit conversion and flow integration circuit to obtain and display the cumulative flow value. At the same time, the pulse signal is sent to the frequency current conversion circuit, which converts the pulse signal into an analog current quantity, and then indicates the instantaneous flow value.
The round gear transmitter has high machining accuracy and precise installation. The rotation of the gear is scanned non-contact, and each tooth generates a pulse with a very high resolution. Cylindrical gear transmitters can measure very small flow and quantify the small volume of liquid.

Oval Gear Flow Meter
Oval gear flow meters (also known as displacement flow meters, gear flow meters) are a type of positive displacement flow meters, which are the most accurate type of flow meters. It uses a mechanical measuring element to continuously divide the fluid into a single known volume part, and measures the total flow volume according to the number of times that the metering chamber is filled and discharged with the volume part of the fluid successively and repeatedly. The oval gear flowmeter can be made of different materials (cast iron, cast steel, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel), and is suitable for flow measurement in the chemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, electric power, metallurgy and food industries.
The measurement principle of the gear of the Cylinder Gear flow meter is similar to that of the oval gear flow meter. But the gear shape is different.
Oval Gear Flow Meter Advantages and Disadvantages

- With direct reading of on-site flow. It can measure the cumulative total without external power supply. The display is clear and the operation is convenient.
The oval gear flowmeter is a combination of measuring elements. The indirect method of volumetric flow measurement. Compared with other flow meters that use velocity to derive flow. Oval gear flow meters have the following disadvantages:
- The design of the measurement structure is complicated. Large and bulky. In particular, the flowmeter with a larger caliber is bulky. Compared with other general flow meters (such as orifice flow meters, float flow meters, electromagnetic flow meters, vortex flow meters). The measured medium type, medium working condition (temperature, pressure), and caliber are relatively limited. The scope of adaptation is narrow.
- Not suitable for high and low temperature occasions. Because of the thermal expansion and deformation of parts at high temperatures, the material becomes brittle at low temperatures. The usable temperature range is -30~+180℃. The maximum pressure is 10MPa.
- The oval gear flowmeter is only suitable for clean single-phase fluids. When the fluid contains particles or dirt, a filter must be installed upstream. Not only increases the pressure loss, but also increases the maintenance work. If measuring liquids containing gas, a gas separator must be installed.
- Poor safety performance during measurement. If the measuring element is stuck in motion, the fluid cannot pass through. The cut-off piping system cannot be used.
- During the measurement process, the pulsation caused by the flow of fluid during the measurement process. Large-diameter flowmeters can also generate noise. Even the pipes vibrate.
